What appeared at first to be a botched burglary would snowball into a tangled web of deceit, corruption, and government abuse of power that involved some of the highest figures in the U.S. political establishment.

The Origins of the Scandal

On the night of June 17, 1972, five men were caught breaking into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters, which was located in the Watergate Hotel and Office Complex. Their mission was to plant wiretaps and gather intelligence on the DNC’s strategy for the upcoming presidential election. At face value, the burglary seemed like an isolated event, a simple break-in by a handful of low-level operatives. However, as the investigation unfolded, it became clear that these men had ties to Nixon’s re-election campaign, and the break-in was merely the surface of something much more nefarious.

The burglars were not acting on their own. They were part of a covert operation orchestrated by the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP)—Nixon’s campaign organization. Their mission was part of a broader scheme to sabotage Nixon’s political opponents, including wiretapping the phones of Democratic Party officials, stealing documents, and creating a false narrative that would benefit Nixon’s re-election efforts. This espionage was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Cover-Up and the Web of Deception

As investigations progressed, it became clear that the break-in was only the beginning of a far-reaching conspiracy that involved systematic abuse of power and deliberate cover-ups at the highest levels of government. The White House’s involvement in the break-in and the subsequent efforts to obstruct the investigation would form the heart of the scandal.
